Hazelnuts: Prices hit rock bottom

ORDU. Interests on the hazelnut market are shifting increasingly towards the new crop. Despite the additional purchase option in the TMO for prompt deliveries, prices are still dropping.

 

New surveys are coming up

New surveys in the growing areas should confirm the estimates for the 2017 crop. Market players are expecting reports about empty shells and unfavourable weather conditions any time soon, but in their opinion, one should not give them too much attention.

Current offers for the new crop vary considerably. Good crop estimates and the expected surpluses have added enormous pressure to the market. On the other side, potential intervention purchases by the TMO at the beginning of the season and a certain residual risk of crop losses are causing some traders to wait before they start offering at prices below the current market level. Hazelnuts from the 2016 crop are being offered at a price of 9.50 TRY/kg, whereby the farmers are actually demanding at least 12 TRY/kg.
