Hazelnuts: alarming reports on new crop

ORDU. The lira slipped to its lowest against the US dollar last week since 20 December over concerns over the war in Ukraine but has since recovered against the euro and nominally against the US dollar. In 2021, the currency lost 44% in value. This year’s losses amount to around 8% so far. Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine is, however, not the only concern in the market.

Crop damages are possible

Issue is that sub-zero temperatures gripped the orchards in the East and West Coast of the Black Sea region over the weekend. Temperatures even dropped to as low as -15C or 5F in high altitudes. Fortunately, the shrubs bloom late here. As the winter has been rather cold so far this has prevented early blooming in the East such as in Samsun, Ordu and Giresun and Trabzon. Matters are, however, different at the west coast since flowers started to bloom in February crop damages are very well possible here.
