USA is the most important buyer
As the experts at fresh fruit report, suppliers of fresh ginger from Peru did not have a good start to 2025, with only 2,934 mt worth USD 5.9 million exported in January, 2% less in volume and 26% less in value than in the same month last year. The average export price, which was USD 2.68/kg in January 2024, has fallen to USD 2.01/kg.
Peru exported its ginger to a total of twelve countries in January 2025. The most important buyer by far was the USA, which accounted for 71% of Peru's exports of fresh ginger. This corresponds to 1,802 mt worth USD 4.16 million. The Netherlands followed in second place with 487 mt worth USD 1 million, followed by Canada, which imported 134 mt worth just over 304,000 USD.
Costa Rica takes Brazil's place - at least for now
As FreshPlaza reports, Brazil temporarily stopped supplying conventional ginger to the USA in mid-January, meaning that suppliers are now sourcing their produce mainly from Costa Rica. However, Alan Goldberg, market expert at A&B Tropical Produce, states that the quality of the produce is no longer as good as it was a few weeks ago, which is due to the weather conditions. Nevertheless, the advantage that Costa Rica supplies ginger almost all year round cannot be denied. Organic goods are also supplied to the USA from Peru, as well as from China. Honduras also exports certain quantities, although their quality is not convincing.
Demand is still present, but Goldberg states that buying interest was much stronger this time last year. Prices for ginger from both Costa Rica and Peru are higher than in 2024, partly due to higher production costs. Nevertheless, both countries will continue to supply ginger to the USA in the future. The popular Brazilian ginger should also be available again from May and Costa Rica is likely to take a back seat for some time again.
