LIMA/BRUSSELS Peruvian ginger exports fell in November compared to the same month last year. The average price is also significantly lower. EU imports have declined slightly compared to last year.

Various difficulties

As reported by the market experts at fresh fruit, Peru exported a total of 6,348 mt of ginger worth USD 11.9 million in November. This is 14% less in volume and 27% less in value than in the same month last year. The average price also fell year-on-year, by 15% to USD 1.87/kg. The annual cumulative volumes are therefore 46,427 mt (-34%) and USD 100 million (-14%). Poor weather conditions had limited Peruvian production this year, resulting in lower availability. In addition, the informality of Peruvian processes caused European buyers to doubt the quality of the goods, as fresh fruit adds.

Fresh ginger is in demand

Fresh ginger was by far the main product purchased in November; a total of 96% of Peruvian ginger was exported as fresh produce and only 4% had already been processed at the time of export. Exports of fresh ginger totalled 6,185 mt worth USD 11.4 million, which corresponds to an average price of USD 1.85/kg. This leaves 163 mt of processed ginger with a value of 479,000 mt and an average price of USD 4.62/kg.

According to fresh fruit, Peru exported ginger to a total of 17 export destinations in November. The most important buyer was the USA with 49% of total exports (2,975 mt worth USD 5.8 million), followed by the Netherlands with 36%, Spain (4%) and Canada (4%). A total of 71 Peruvian exporters participated in the ginger exports.

EU imports slightly down

EU ginger imports fell by 4% in in the period from 1 January to 15 December 2024 compared to the same period last year. The most important supplier by far is China, which supplied 3,097 mt to EU countries in this period – an impressive 52.3% more than in the same period last year. It was followed by Nigeria, which suffered significant losses (-45.7% to 1,419 mt), and India, which in contrast was able to increase its exports to the EU by almost 50% to 984 mt. Peru ranks 6th among the EU's most important sourcing countries. The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium are the largest ginger buyers within the EU.
