LIMA/BRUSSELS. Peruvian ginger exports fell in volume in July, but rose in value. EU ginger imports are down and Nigeria is no longer the top supplier.

Price rises in Peru

According to the Peruvian news website Agencia Agraria de Noticias, Peru's ginger exports totalled 4,688 mt worth USD 9.7 million in July. This corresponds to a decline in volume of a good 20% with an increase in value of 9.4%. In July 2023, 5,885 mt worth USD 8.9 million were shipped overseas. The increase in value is due to the higher average export price, which stood at USD 2.07/kg and was therefore 37.3% higher than in the previous year. Lower production in China and India, important countries of cultivation, was responsible for the price increases in Peru.

Peru supplies its ginger to a total of 16 destinations worldwide. The USA is the most important export destination, accounting for more than 46% of the total volume; in July, 1,978 mt worth USD 4.5 million were shipped to the United States. This is followed by the Netherlands with 35% of total exports in July (1,661 mt worth USD 3.4 million), Spain with 7% (293 mt worth 674,000 mt) and Canada with 4% (199 mt worth 388,000 mt).

EU imports from Nigeria almost halved

The EU imported a total of 5,042 mt of ginger in the first eight months of the year (1 January - 2 September 2024), a good 15% less than in the same period last year. China was able to significantly increase its shipments by almost 33% and has thus become the most important supplier for the EU; Nigeria, which topped the list last year, suffered a decline of 46.3% this time and is now only in second place. Vietnam and Côte d'Ivoire also delivered significantly less ginger to the EU than last year, while India was able to increase its shipments by a good 35%. The largest buyers in the EU were the Netherlands (+14.9% to 1,930 mt), Germany (-47.5% to 1,460 mt) and Belgium (+7.5% to 572 mt).
