Coriander: difficult market situation

MOSCOW/GUJARAT. Exports from Russia have notably declined over the last few years. Market opinions differ greatly. While some farmers have stopped cultivating the spices, others still consider coriander highly profitable. The market in India is meanwhile confronted with quality issues.

Nearly 30% decline in exports

After the total export volume for spices rose sharply in Russia in 2016 to as much as 62,000 tonnes, the market witnessed a notable decline. Last year exports ranged as low as 44,000 tonnes worth USD 27 million. Coriander is the main driver in this export market. The main export destinations for coriander include India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia as Russia exported spices worth USD 16 million to these three destinations. Companies in Russia, however, also ship coriander and other spices to Europe, where export destinations include Germany,
