HANOI. Producers in Vietnam still largely depend on imports from Africa to meet demand.

Heavy rains, which had an adverse effect on production in 2016, started the problems in Vietnam. With production estimated to decrease by a further 18% this year’s situation is hardly encouraging.

High prices

Vietnam and India are the world’s leading exporters. The USA is the main buyer. Cashews from Vietnam are, however, also gaining importance in Germany. Vietnam has so far exported 165,000 mt (+2.3%) worth 1.62 billion USD (+30%) in the first half of 2017.

The country is planning to import 500,000 mt of RCN and intends to export a total of 360,000 mt this year. Cashew kernels, WW320, food grade are currently trading for an average price of 11 USD/kg, which may deter buyers. Traders who have already stocked up on more expensive supplies will hardly be willing to reduce their prices.
