Cashews: A difficult situation

DODOMA/NEW DELHI. The nationalisation of the cashew industry in Tanzania has now entered the next phase. In addition to the possible cooperation with foreign processors, there still is untapped potential at home.

 

Refusing help

At a first meeting between government representatives and private entrepreneurs, a possible cooperation was discussed in order to promote the processing of RCN in the country. Of the 23 processing plants in Tanzania, only eight are reportedly in current operation. Cooperation with processors from further afield is also being taken into consideration. To date, a maximum of 10% of the annual RCN production has been processed in the domestic market. In order to be able to process the entire crop, it is now necessary to pave the way.
