Cashews: Cambodia has ambitious plans

HANOI/PHNOM PENH. A recently announced policy for the cashew industry reveals the big plans Cambodia has made until 2027. The Southeast Asian country is already the most important supplier for Vietnam.

Cambodia wants to become market leader

As reported by the Vietnam Cashews Association (Vinacas), the Cambodian Ministry of Trade announced at the beginning of the week the implementation of a national policy for the cashew industry covering the period 2022-2027. The policy focuses on three main objectives. The first is to increase production capacity while maintaining competitive quality; the second is to accelerate industrialisation and increase processing of by-products to further increase profits. At the same time, trade activities are to be facilitated and costs reduced for market players. In the process, Cambodia is to become the leading country in terms of production and shipments of cashew products - both on the domestic and international markets.

Vietnam most important supplier for Germany

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Cambodia had 435,733 ha of cashew plantations in 2022, of which 330,861 ha were harvested. The quantity amounted to 508,283 mt, the majority of which (471,520 mt) was accounted for by the export of raw cashew nuts. Cambodia is also the most important supplier for Vietnam, with a market share of 52% of Vietnamese imports.

Germany's cashew imports in the period September 2022 to April 2023 increased by almost 12% year-on-year to 41,816 mt. Cambodia did not make it into the top 10 of the most important suppliers. These are led by Vietnam, followed in second place by Côte d'Ivoire, which increased its shipments to Germany by a whopping 229% year-on-year. The Netherlands takes third place with an increase of 263.6%, while India's shipments have declined by almost 82%.
