About 700,000 mt are produced every year, mainly in Africa. The kernels are primarily shipped to India and Vietnam, where they are processed for the European and US market.

EU imports from third countries has risen from 103,500 mt to 119,360 mt over the last three years. Shipments from Vietnam have increased from 28,000 mt to 88,261 mt, whereas imports from India have shrunk by 11,000 mt to 16,864 mt. Shipments from Brazil fell by 3,000 mt to 3,526 mt. Switzerland is the main buyer.

Trading activities within the EU have also increased by about 50,000 mt to more than 54,600 mt. The most important suppliers or rather re-exporters are the Netherlands, Germany, the UK and Belgium. German also functions as the principal buyer within the EU and is followed by Belgium and the UK.

Imports to Germany have risen by a further 11,000 mt to 48,042 mt in 2017. The high prices for almonds and hazelnuts are partly held responsible for this development. Vietnam took India place as most important supplier in 2016. Exports from Germany have also increase by 75% to 13,753, mainly to Luxemburg, the UK, France and the Netherlands.
