Almonds: The better few

BULGARIA. Locally grown almonds have always been considered exclusive nuts. The Mediterranean climate in some regions of the country allow almonds to provide crispness and tastiness that are incomparable to those of imported almonds – usually from the USA. Indeed, the organic almond quickly finds its ways both on the local and foreign markets.
Almonds: cursed to only scratch domestic demand, but at what prices …
According to almond growers, prices of locally grown nuts are not influenced by those of their imported counterparts. And why should they be when domestic supply only scratches domestic demand every year? After all, if a product lacks a (perfect) substitute on the market while its demand is unfailingly high, it is characterized by inelastic demand – meaning, upper corrections in prices do not influence at the same rate or at all quantities sold.
Exactly that is the case with locally grown almonds; the small collected quantities on a year-to-year basis continue to favor local farmers. Even if the weather factor had been discounted this year and more farmers could have brought their nuts to the market, the difference in quantities could have been meager since the cultivation of almonds has only recently become so prominent. It will take years before substantial quantities of locally grown almonds are collected.
