MADRID/SACRAMENTO. Despite the expected excess production and the carry over stocks from the 2017 crop, supply may only barely suffice in meeting increased demand.

Prices under pressure in Spain
Production is expected to be a little over 60,000 mt, a 13% increase over last year. In the Valencia, Murcia, and Catalan regions, production decreases are expected. This should, however, effortlessly be compensated for by the higher yields in the main cultivation areas of Aragon, Andalusia, and Castilla-La Mancha.

The good crop estimates continue to put pressure on prices, which have dropped by 0.05-0.10 EUR/kg. Growers and traders have spent the last few months looking for reasons to push up prices.
