MADRID/SACRAMENTO. Spain is evidently unable to compete with the United States this season. While US almond exports set a new monthly record in January and already showed signs of recovery in December, the opposite is the case in Spain. Exports slipped by 26% in December. Attention is shifting towards the new crop.

13% decline in exports

Spain exported 10,172 mt mt of almonds in December 2022, which is 13% down on the 11,700 mt shipped in December 2021. Discouraging as these figures are it should, however, be noted that monthly exports range roughly on par with the 8,556 mt exported in December 2020. Although total exports dipped by a less drastic 9% to 65,684 mt in the five-month period between August and December, they display a similar trend. Total exports, in fact, range more than 5,000 mt higher than the 60,561 mt registered in the same period in 2020/201.
