Almonds: Slump in exports to China

SACRAMENTO. Suppliers in California feel the impact of the trade war with China and punitive tariffs. Although total exports rose by nearly 8% in 2017/18, shipments in June fell by 16%.

The 2017 US production has so far exceeded expectations by 0.4%. High demand has nevertheless pushed end-of-season stocks to a record low.

China importer 2,046 mt of almonds from the US last month – a drop of 47.5% as compared to June2017. Germany has also reduced imports by 19% in the same period, whereas total imports range at 56,817 mt (+7.6%) this season so far. Contrary to this, imports from the US to Spain have declined between August 2017 and June 2018 mainly due to an increase in domestic production.
