MADRID. While new almond production estimates have been issued in Spain for this year, the production estimates for last year have come under scrutiny.

Optimistic outlook for 2020

The Spanish Almond Sheller Association DESCALMENDRA and AEOFRUSE, the Spanish Association of Almond Growers Organizations, have issued a joint production estimate for Spain, which takes the actual circumstances and influences into consideration. Previous to this TIOGA Nut Fruit Services had already estimated production at 150.000 metric tonnes. An estimate that was purely bases on the area of cultivation.

Above-average rains in the winter months and good weather conditions during the flowering period enabled a good development. In addition, the area under cultivation has risen over last year and frosty nights only had a limited impact. Production is currently expected to range above 115,600 metric tonnes. Last year's production has also been revised upwards by around 14,000 metric tonnes to 94,000 metric tonnes. This is because the yields in some irrigated areas that first bore almonds had intitially been underestimated. Spain's end-of-season stocks are currently estimated at 6,000 metric tonnes.

Limited offers for organic almonds

These conditions render it difficult for prices to gain a foothold, especially since a bumper crop is also expected in California. Traders in Spain have again cut their prices by around EUR 0.10 per kg. Market players also state that some offers are available for organic almonds, which are said to be sold out. Organic Valencias, 12/14 mm, natural are currently trading at EUR 10.60 per kg FCA Spain.
