SOFIA. Buyers should not expect drastic prices fluctuations after the end of harvest. This season, once again, local output will scratch domestic demand.

Almonds: prices have no ceiling

BULGARIA. According to a market player, who has kept the leading market position in the organic almond sector for quite a time, prices will persist firmly throughout the marketing year. The reason: almonds are well-matured this season, but quantities are coming short of what was initially forecasted because of adverse weather conditions earlier in the year – a sequence of unexpected frosts’ waves damaged the crop.

The great majority of orchards, together with a few larger ones, are too small to satisfy local demand. Yearly, the country produces only a portion of what the local demand seeks. As a result, farmers easily find market for the nut at much higher prices!

Among local buyers, it goes without saying that the quality of locally grown almonds is superior to that of imported ones. Thus, local sellers compete on quality and never on price with imported conventional almonds. The Californian almonds are sold by about 1.50 - 2.00 EUR/kg lower than locally grown ones are, and even though they flood the market every year, local farmers are far away from feeling pressure to lower prices. As a result, the price premium, set on local almonds, has never disfavored local sellers, the majority of whom unload their stocks by Christmas.
