MADRID. Producers in Spain are feeling the pressure. They will not be able to retain the high prices they have been used to for the last few years this season.

Processors refuse to buy

Harvesting started a few days ago in Spain, but the processors are reluctant to buy. Their intention is to force the producers to go further down in price. They will have to sell when they start running out of money. The processors, however, have contracts to fulfil and will eventually be forced to buy. It remains to be seen who will run out of time first.

With an estimated production of 56,000-57,000 mt Spain will need to import 100,000 mt to meet domestic demand. The market will very much take care to label Spanish products in order to stand out from imports from California.

Current prices

The prices in Spain have dropped to their lowest in years. Natural Valencia are trading on an average price of 5.00 EUR/kg EXW Spain. Marconas and Larguetas are trading on a level of 6.00-8.00 EUR/kg EXW Spain, depending on size.
