MADRID. A few weeks ago, as frost was reported in the Spanish province of Castilla-La Mancha, market observers drew up possible horror scenarios for the 2017/18 season.

As demonstrated by the current estimates from the National Nuts Bureau, this fear is unfounded. Larger acreages in the main growing regions are making the crop predictions skyrocket, around 57,750 mt of almonds should be harvested in Spain this year. This result would not only exceed last year's value by 21%, it would also be the highest-yielding almond crop in more than 10 years. In Andalusia alone, the production should rise by 50% compared to 2016 and in Murcia still by 25%.

Attractive prices
The upcoming record crops in two of the most important growing countries, the USA and Spain, are putting increasing pressure on the almond prices. Despite the good prospects, it must be considered that factors such as unfavourable weather can still reduce the actual crop results.
