SACRAMENTO. In the recently issued objective estimate, the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) cut the crop estimate by 12% over May.

Less than 1 million mt US almonds
On Wednesday, NASS issued objective production estimates. At just under 998,000 mt, the crop estimate is not only 12% below the May estimates, but also 3.5% below last year's production. While the bearing acreage of 1.17 million acres is larger than ever, the yield is expected to be well below five-year moving average. As the NASS reports, the unusual weather conditions had a disastrous effect on the almonds. Heavy rainfall and strong winds made pollination difficult and shook fruit from the trees. At times, even whole trees were uprooted. The high export figures of the last few months coupled with these revised production estimates, should encourage firmer prices.
