CANBERRA. Projections for almonds range on a similar level as last year in Australia after frost was witnessed in September. Exports are still record breaking.

Plus 20,000 ha

Initial estimates for this year's crop stood at 164,700 for shelled almonds. September frosts have, however, prompted the Almond Board of Australia (ABA) to revise estimates downwards to 155,531 mt at the start of February. This is similar in size to last year's crop. Silver lining, however, is that the almond trees planted on 20,000 ha between 2017 and 2019 will turn productive this year. In the current crop report ABA further states that dry weather conditions have enabled some farmers to start harvesting up to two weeks earlier. Quality should also profit from nuts drying on dry grounds rather than in wet conditions. Expecation is, in addition, that the kernel size will be larger than last year.

China and India remain top buyers

Total monthly shipments stood at 13,903 mt in December 2024, which is 51% up on December 2023. While domestic shipments slumped by 44% to 796 mt, exports surged by an impressive 75% to 13,106 mt. This marks a new record for December at a time when supplies normal start to dwindle.

Total shipments amounted to 158,339 mt between March and December, which is a stunning 32% up on last year. Exports thereby surged by 39% to 137,479 mt, domestic shipments declined by 2% to 20,860 mt. Exports to China have more than doubled and shipments to India are 10% up. Contrary to this, shipments to Turkey have witnessed a nominal decline.
