MADRID/SACRAMENTO. The media in Spain reports that frost has damaged up to 50% of the production on Valencia. Contrary to this, the prospects on California are more encouraging. Acreage has increased.

Crop damages in Valencia

Current production estimates range at 3,500 mt for shelled almonds in Valencia. In the past. Production has ranged much higher than this over the past few years, namely up to 6,500 mt.

In general, the outlook for Spain is very mixed. In some regions the frost has damaged 50-100%, while other regions are expecting a good production. Exact figures will, however, only be issued over the next few weeks. A general production estimate for Spain will be issued at the INC Congress, which is held at the end of May.

Prices have remained relatively stable over the last two weeks. Valencia almonds are trading nominally lower than last week. The prices on offers for Marcona almonds are firm and Largueta almonds are trading up to 0.05 EUR/kg cheaper.

Increase in US acreage

The prices for US almonds have risen in the European spot market. Traders have gone up in price for whole almonds by up to 0.05 EUR/kg. Almond preparations are, however, trading at the same price as last week.

In the California, acreage is steadily increasing. This year acreage expected to grow to 1.17 million acres (approx. 473,500 ha), compared to 1.09 million acres (approx. 441,100 ha) last year. It should, however, be noted that not only acreage but also the yields are very important for production. Over the last four years, yields varied between 2,000 and 2,250 lbs/Acre. The production estimates for California will be issued towards the end of next week.
