Increase in production should be safe
Instead of relying purely on statistical projections and estimates, Mesa Nacional de Frutos Secos has calculated the forecast for the Spanish almond crop in 2020 on the basis of officially declared areas under cultivation. The data had been collected in 2019 and made available to the association by the Ministry of Agriculture. Due to the new basis of calculation, however, it is not possible to make direct comparisons with previous years.
The total production potential is said to be 95,579 metric tonnes of shelled almonds, about 118,000 ha of young almond trees are not included in the calculation as they are not expected to have a yield this year. This is significantly less than the estimates of others. The experts from DESCALMENDRA (Spanish Almond Sheller Association) and AEOFRUSE (Spanish Association of Almond Growers Organizations) had previously made a joint forecast of a total of 115,600 metric tonnes, which also corresponds to the figures of the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council. Only after the harvest will it become clear how high the result actually was. However, a production increase compared to 2019 seems very likely at present.

Prices stable for the time being
With the exception of slight, trader-dependent fluctuations, prices in the almond market have now stabilised after a steady downward trend in recent months. On 7 July, the National Agricultural Statistics Service will publish objective estimates for the US crop in 2020, which could cause prices to move again, depending on the outcome.
Meanwhile, Australian almonds, Carmel Supreme, 27/30, natural, are traded in the European spot market for EUR 4.10 per kg FCA Spain. According to the Almond Board of Australia, a total of 76,556 metric tonnes of almonds were exported from Australia in the 2019/2020 season, a good 15,000 metric tonnes more than the previous record volume. About 40,000 metric tonnes went to China, the second most important customer was Germany with a good 5,500 metric tonnes.
