SACRAMENTO. The Californian almond harvest started somewhat later than usual this year, meaning production is currently lagging behind last year.

More than 1.2 million mt of US almonds
August saw 85,955 mt of US almonds harvested, down 12% when compared to last year. The production result for 2018/19 is estimated at a total of 1.04 million mt. Together with last season’s carry over stocks, a good 1.2 million mt of US almonds should be available this season.

It will be a few weeks before the new crop arrives on the European market. Spanish traders are still offering last year's crop for prompt deliveries, but at significantly higher prices than this time last year.
