Almond crop up to 7% smaller than expected

MADRID/SACRAMENTO. Market observers report that global almond consumption grows by 5% annually. Just as well that California is expecting a record crop this year. In Spain, the producers are not as optimistic as they were just a few weeks ago.

 

Disappointment in Andalusia

A spokesperson for the Young Farmers Association in Andalusia reported that the national almond production will be smaller than expected.

The nationwide almond crop will only yield 52,000-53,000 mt compared to the previously expected 56,000-57,000 mt. But even these results are 14% higher than in 2016. Nevertheless, the price increase in the Spanish almond market was only temporary. Farmers hoping for similar prices to the record setting year of 2015, were bitterly disappointed.
