Wheat: Weather worries have eased … yet, not fully
BULGARIA. Generally, weather conditions have improved for the majority of regions, with the exception of some places within the Southwest of the country where intermittent showers still annoy farmers. According to some land owners, the Spring was belated by 15 to 20 days, and as a result fieldwork was postponed and necessarily pushed forward. Currently, farmers spray and fertilize wheat fields, although in the fields of some regions machines sink in the soil since water reserves are still abundant.
It is only natural to try to surpass previous achievements! According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the 12th of April 2018, planted acreages with wheat stood at 1,134,007 ha, which on a year-to-year basis is a rise of 3.4%. Before the upcoming harvest starts there is still time, and as a result, the yearly difference may change; yet, expectations are for sowed fields not to fall below those of last year. However, the weather factor must not be discounted since hailstorms, for instance, could inflict irrecoverable damages. So, between now and the start of harvest, plenty could go wrong.
Higher still and higher
At the close of marketing season 2016-17, total exports were nailed at 4,168,623 mt, which represented a share of 73.62% out of aggregate output – 5,662,721 mt. Back then, intermediary market players observed that the figure was the highest within a period of at least several years. About 70 days before the official start of harvest 2018-19, up-to-date exports stand at 3,947,615 mt, representing a share of 63.93% out of a national harvest of 5.9mmt. The earlier vibrant export rate of wheat is expected to slow down in the following months, but shipped volumes abroad are forecasted go beyond the 4.0 mmt nerve ceiling by the end of the month. This year’s exports could easily top those of last year.
