BULGARIA. Since season 2017-18 has been quite a success for local market players – aggregate output reached 6,134,496 mt or the highest in a period of at least twenty years while up-to-date exports have already surpassed those (4,168,623 mt) of the whole marketing season last year or the highest in recent years – the market expects farmers to cumulatively enter a larger fields’ area this year. And enter they will!
Wheat: Farmers are standing in front of larger acreages for harvest 2018-19
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the 17th of May 2018, estimates on available for harvest nationwide land stood at 1,141,979 ha or by 4.1% more than those of last year by this time. However, a larger planted field area does not necessarily mean a higher output and good grains’ characteristics, since the weather factor yet has to be accounted for. And, that usually happens only after combines have entered fields and crops have been collected.

Customarily, wheat, relative to its other local agricultural counterparts, takes the largest area for cultivation. Throughout the years, Bulgarian grown wheat has confidently conquered new markets, indeed those in Western Europe, as well as, markets in third world countries. As a net exporter on an annual basis, the country ships abroad the majority of its produce. Currently, total exports represent a share of 71% out of aggregate output 2017-18. The rest is consumed on the local market, as the largest share goes to the food sector, followed by the livestock one. Imports remain small on an annual basis, as by the 25th of the month the figure came to 63,626 mt. According to local authorities, remaining stocks amount to just 378,202 mt.
