SOFIA. No need to win by a sudden blow and then start to drift off; do it slowly over a long period of time. This year’s panted acreages are expected to lead ahead those of last year.

BULGARIA. The first snow fell a few days ago. According to local farmers, the snow did not endanger the recently sowed grains since it was a wet snow and quickly melted in the majority of regions. No so much the expected snow, as so much the expected lower temperatures are what will affect the development of local crops. Yet, the Winter season is coming and in the middle of next month, temperatures are expected to fall as low as -10 to -15 Celsius degrees. Then, however, the snow – indeed, the thick snow – serves as a cushion for the crops against the expected harsh weather conditions.

Wheat: Ignites growing interest among local farmers

Nothing stimulates more interest in planting more acreages of a specific agricultural commodity than its growing demand. And indeed, when climate conditions are favorable for the growth of the crop, farmers heavily invest in the cultivation of the grain. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the 16th of November 2017, estimates of sowed acreages with wheat reached 1,042,800 ha, which in a year-to-year basis is by 8.2% higher.

No retreat, no surrender in the realm of prices

Prices are far away from experiencing a hike any time soon because of the surplus supply in the region, but they do not retreat their slow but what seems by now a certain climb. Winning does not need to happen by a swift blow. No, it has been happening by a snail motion speed, and the strong and consistent export rate, since the beginning of the marketing season, has stood as a witness. Although competition in the Black sea basin is heated, so far local prices persist to slide on a bearish trend. The reasons behind are the strong domestic and foreign demands on the background of the high quality characteristics of this year’s grains.
