SOFIA. Farmers have already started sowing wheat. Unfortunately, the majority of regions have not received any precipitation until recently.

Wheat: farming is an open factory under the sky

BULGARIA. The weather conditions before the start of wheat harvest this year were quite auspicious within the North regions; in the South, farmers did not get the necessary precipitation. In the North, favorable rains kept the moisture reserves in the different layers of the soil and as a consequence resulted in an increase of the yield potential of the grain.

As a result, farmers, whose fields were situated in the North of the Balkan mountain range, realized higher than expected output, with an estimated aggregate yield for the country reaching 5.25 mt/ha. In some fields of the Northeast, farmers recorded a yield of as high as 6.00 mt/ha.

Weather conditions during sowing are vital

However, precipitation is also extremely important before and after sowing. The lack of it endangers the development of the crop and weighs directly on its future prospects.  Farmers throughout the country have complained of lack of rains for at least a month and a half, until recent days when different regions received low amounts of precipitation.

Farmers say some rain is still better than nothing, but a drowning man will clutch at a straw! Whether planting under favorable weather conditions or not, farmers already started sowing. One thing is sure, their seeds are prepared and are already leaving storage facilities to be disseminated in fields. Showers are forecasted during the upcoming week.
