BULGARIA. In the North regions of the country, and indeed only in some fields, farmers are resuming fieldwork step-by-step. Recently, the moisture in the soil has been quite abundant, which restricts normal husbandry activities on a larger scale. The current time is crucial to engage in fertilizing and spraying activities.
Wheat: size begets size
Harvest 2017-18 produced the highest aggregate output – 5.9 mmt for a period of at least twenty years. The quality characteristics of wheat this year have been very good, according to local farmers, and as result, foreign demand has been strong since the beginning of the marketing season. Closing the first week of April, and with two and a half months left before the start of the upcoming harvest, exports to EU markets have reached 3,366,014 mt, which on a year-to-year basis is a rise of 42.71%. The higher availability of grains this year has allowed intermediary market players to increase their export share to EU markets. Usually, locally grown wheat is mainly exported to Spain, followed by shipments to Italy, Greece, etc. The vibrant export rate will nosedive, once remaining stocks are insufficient to fill-in ships, as currently, remaining quantities are being quickly depleted. Annually, the country is a net exporter to the world, and as a result, imports represent an iota.

However, the ample supply of wheat within the Black sea basin has not favored exports to countries outside the EU so far in the season: a trend that is foreseen to continue till the end of the current marketing year. By the 6th of April 2018, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, total shipped volumes to non-EU markets came to 556,601 mt, which on a year-to-year basis stand by 60.62% lower.
