SOFIA. The latest export figures indicate that the market is hungry for wheat from Bulgaria, especially the EU. But will this success story continue?

According to the Ministry of Agriculture total exports of wheat reached 3,011,529 mt by the end of December 2016. This represents 53.39% of total output for 2016. Only through Varna seaport, total exports by 1 January 2017 stood at 1,286,195 mt, which is 20.9% higher than last year. Increased supplies and attractive prices are the main reasons for the increase in exports. It is consequently estimated that exports for 2016-17 could well reach up to 4,000,000 mt. Bulgaria mainly exports wheat to the countries of the European Union, such as Spain, Romania and Italy. Smaller quantities are sold to other countries.

Black Sea countries influence prices
The current prices are lower than in 2015 because domestic output increased in 2016. In addition, Russia has harvested record quantities of wheat.

Future prices will mainly depend on the supply of wheat on the international market. Although production in the European Union is expected to drop this year, FAO-AMIS reckons that global supplies may increase by up to 2%.

Currently, milling wheat is trading for 0.162 EUR/kg CPT domestic port while feed wheat is sold for 0.159 EUR/kg CPT domestic port. Growing concerns for the quality of next crop, due to low temperatures have caused the prices to reach a 12-month high.
