Wheat: France and Germany make a firm start into the New Year 2020

FRANKFURT. The wheat markets remained firm even after the turn of the year 2020. In the USA, speculation about higher wheat purchases by China in 2020 is driving the market. In the EU, lower expectations for the coming EU wheat harvest, stronger EU demand for feed wheat and poor growth conditions for Ukrainian wheat due to drought are driving up prices.

After price losses in Chicago, the US wheat market rose again by 3.50 cents to 559.50 cents per bushel. EU wheat stopped at EUR 189.00 per metric tonne in Paris. In the USA, disappointing results in export controls for US wheat initially caused price losses in Chicago. However, the US market benefited from the weaker USD and the positive course of the trade talks with China. The signing of the Phase 1 deal is now scheduled to take place on 15 January 2020 in Washington, according to trade.
