SOFIA. Exports to EU markets at all-time high. The weather has been fickle, but yet has selectively tampered fields throughout the country.

Wheat: Natural forces stand in front of farmers

BULGARIA. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the end of May 2018, estimates for nationwide fallen-through areas stood at 92 ha, which represents an iota on the background of available for harvest land in the breadth of 1,143,080 ha. Recent heavy rains within the Northeast of the country and what seemed, according to local farmers, to have been a swift tornado, having a locally confined impact, have taken their tolls within nearby fields. Some farmers complained of losing parts of their plots to the devastating natural force. Estimates of the recent damages will become public later in the month.

That has been the strongest export season

The country is a net exporter of wheat, as the majority of the grain goes to markets of the EU such as Spain, Italy, Romania, among others while much smaller quantities get shipped to third world countries. By the 1st of June 2018, according to local authorities, market players exported 3,667,014 mt to EU countries, which on a year-to-year basis stood by 47.14% higher. Competitive prices and the much higher quality of the crops from harvest 2017-18 boosted exports since early in the season and kept their momentum strong. Remaining stocks amount to just 333,702 mt.

On the other hand, shipped volumes to non-EU markets continue to lack in force and magnitude when compared to those of last year. By the end of last week, the country exported to third world countries 707,106 mt, which lag behind by 54.57% in favour of those from last year.  The reason for the depressed export rate has been strong harvests in countries within the Black sea basin such as Russia and their export clout in foreign markets. As a result, no significant change is expected on both export fronts; after all, harvest 2018-19 looms on the horizon.
