Exports started later this year because of the belated and interrupted harvest. National output will be lower than that of last season.

Wheat: end of harvest

SOFIA. The last remaining fields in the Southwest and central South regions of the country have been harvested while farmers from the North regions already finished collecting the crop long time ago. Although general harvest this year moved at a slower pace because of unexpected and continuous rains just before and during harvest, by the 27th of July 2017, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, the country collected an estimate of 5,144,806 mt of wheat.

Will the recently collected crop from the Southwest and central South regions add much in favor to the aggregate national output? Outputs from the Southwest and central South regions of Bulgaria are usually small in comparison with those of the other regions of the country. A case in point, during season 2016-17, cumulative outputs from the two regions accounted for just 11.14% of total national output, which reached 5,662,721 – the highest production figure for a period of more than a decade.

Lower relative exports so far

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, since the beginning of the marketing season till the 30th of July 2017, exports of wheat, via Varna seaport, accounted to 156,432 mt. The figure is by 41.40% lower than registered exports via the same sea route on a yearly basis. Belated and interrupted harvesting season is the main culprit. By that time, via Burgas seaport no quantities of wheat were shipped to foreign countries. Yet, the general feel of the market is that exports are quickly mounting, and by end of last month, total exports reached 328,000 mt. The lower price and the relatively high quality of the crop this year will further propel exports.
