SOFIA. Within the Northeast, wheat fields look good. In other places throughout the country, though, dry soil conditions infuse anxieties in farmers.

BULGARIA. Several weeks ago, some plots - mainly in the Southeast of the country, got soaked so much in water that some farmers complained of losing all they had sowed in those fields. Later, temperatures drastically changed, shot up above the threshold of the season and currently remain high. Presently, the dryness of the soil in some regions of the country has already made farmers anxious about the prospects for their crops. In some fields, the dryness goes to 10 cm to 15 cm below the surface of the ground. According to a local farmer of numerous hectares, right now, wheat needs water and every drop is crucial for its development. If the weather does not provide necessary rains within the following ten days, some farmers will see their dreams evaporate in the air.

The majority of wheat is usually exported to EU destinations such as Spain, Italy, and Greece among other countries. By the end of last week, local market players shipped to markets of the EU 3,481,014 mt while by that time last year, exports to the same destination accounted to 2,410,059 mt. However, exports to non-EU markets have significantly lagged behind on a yearly basis, as by the 20th of the month, shipments to destinations outside the Union accounted to only 626,601 mt while by that time last year, quantities reached 1,438,383 mt. The ample availability of wheat within the Black sea basin, besides the market clout of big regional market players such as Russia, has influenced the local export rate to such destinations substantially since the beginning of the marketing season.
