The worst nightmare -- too much rain and frosts -- of farmers during the blossoming period of walnut trees has long passed. This year’s harvest is expected to be strong.

Walnuts: forecasts are for a strong output

SOFIA. So far in the Summer, the weather has been quite favorable for the development of the crop throughout the country. Frosts fell early in the year, but their impact was confined to some high regions in the Northwest and central Bulgaria. Overall, predictions are for a very strong season! In September, local farmers will start to collect the crop.

Nationwide, trees are full of walnuts – the green husk is fresh and no rotten traces are present! Farmers are sure this year will be quite different from last one, which was a disaster. About that time last year, farmers already knew season 2016-17 would be a catastrophe because in whole regions, orchard trees did lack walnuts while in those where trees had them, they were much smaller and their husks were already in dark colors.

In the realm of prices

Since carry-over of season 2016-17 will not cover the short positions of buyers on the market early in the new season, prices are expected to start high. The prices of those local farmers who export to Western European countries will depend on prices and outputs in the other countries from Eastern and Central Europe. Prices of locally grown walnuts sold on the domestic market are always higher than prices of exported walnuts. Currently, some big store chains sell walnuts with a Ukrainian origin.
