Walnuts: Disaster has struck

SOFIA. The harvest this year has turned out to be a disaster, somewhat similar to that of 2014, with a few remarkable exceptions here and there. But the situation has got even worse now.

Hungry market
The carryover from 2015 is high. Conventional light kernels, harvest 2015-16, are trading in the range of 4.00 – 5.80 EUR/kg, depending on the fraction and preserved quality. Yet, the market yearns for fresh and crispy kernels and shuns the less expensive ones from 2015. Prices have already started to increase.

Run on imports
Season 2016-17 turned out to be astonishingly worse than what is seemed before the harvest. Those farmers, who did not collect the crop from the trees, seem to have won in the short-run since they did not incur the unnecessary expenses of finding the precious few among the rubbish. Those, who dared to collect, are throwing massively. But the estimated carryover of 500 mt cannot compete with the high quality current crop. The market does not care since it is hungry for a new crop. There are rumours afloat that walnuts have already been imported to the local market.
