Vanilla: Prices remain sky-high in Madagascar

ANTANANARIVO: The cycle of high demand, low supply, and therefore surging vanilla prices may seem to to be coming to an end. Challenges, however, remain and a price collapse is unlikely in the near term. Global demand for vanilla is estimated at about 4,500 MT per year, far exceeding real production and supplies.

 Origin of the plant

Vanilla is the second most expensive spice in the world after saffron due to its expensive and labour-intensive cultivation.

Madagascar cultivates almost 80% of the world’s vanilla. Other major growers are Indonesia, Mexico, Comoros, Reunion, India, Papua New Guinea and the Seychelles.

Vanilla does not originate in Madagascar. The Aztecs were the first to cultivate it in what is now Mexico, where vanilla was mixed with cocoa to make chocolate eaten mostly by aristocrats. Early Spanish explorers initial
