SOFIA. The weather remains largely dry in Bulgaria and rain is required. Negotiations for the new sunflower seed crop are to start soon.

Farmgate prices level off

Sowing is nearly complete. Official estimates on acreage still, however, need to be issued. In the March report. Coceral, nevertheless, estimated that production will decline to 1.78 million metric tonnes due to an anticipated cut back in acreage and yields. Since farmgate prices have already risen sharply in recent weeks in Bulgaria, the forecasts of dry weather only have a limited impact on prices. Black in shells with a 96% purity have now, in fact, levelled off at EUR 353 per metric tonne CPT Varna. Continued demand in the domestic market and in Turkey, where the import duty on sunflower seeds has been cut, should prevent prices from decliing again in the short run.

Release orders finally subside

The demand for sunflower kernels is starting to decline after many buyers have already ordered their contracts to be released. However, the rise in farmgate prices is preventing the export prices for bakery kernels from falling. Bakery kernels are trading in a range of EUR 0.74-0.77 per kg DDP Germany. Prices are also expected to range higher over the next few months as processing and stocks will decline until the new crop arrives. Negotiations for the new crop should, however, start soon.
