SOFIA. Last week’s hailstorm has left its traces in Bulgaria. The areas in and around Veliko Tarnovo, Pleven, Lovech, Kardam, Ruse, Razgrad and Sofia were hit particularly hard.

Reports state that 250 compensations claims have reached the insurances. About 15,800 ha have been affected and severe damage has been caused to grains and oil seeds. Some corn farmers in the Northwest and Central Bulgaria even report complete loses.

Unimpressed market

Contrary to this, the sunflower seed market remains remarkably unimpressed. The prices for raw unhulled black sunflower seeds, 96% remain stable at 314 EUR/mt CPT Varna. The prices for prompt deliveries of bakery kernels are also firm at 630 EUR/mt FCA. As the season progresses the buyers are growing increasingly interested in the new crop, which is currently trading for 600 EUR/mt FCA Bulgaria.
