Sunflower seeds: production to range at 1.68 million metric tonnes

SOFIA. In anticipation of falling prices, many buyers are reluctant to commit to contracts and prefer spot purchases instead. The yields and quality are reportedly not exactly encouraging. Prices are expected to turn eventually.

Buyers speculate falling prices

Official production estimates for Bulgaria are still to be issued. At 2.3 metric tones per hectare, however, average yields fall well short of last year's figure. This is why current produciton estimates range as low as 1.685 million metric tonnes, despite the increase in acreage. In addition, the kernels are reportedly comparatively small meaning that there will be a relatively high volume of material that cannot be processed. Prices have, however, remained stable so far.
