Sunflower seeds: production forecasts differ

SOFIA/KYIV. In Ukraine, farmers have now finished sowing. The cultivation of sunflower seeds could not reach the planned target. Meanwhile, disagreement is leading to unclear crop forecasts for the Bulgarian sunflower seed crop.

Acreage smaller than expected

Last week, spring sowing was finalised in Ukraine. A total of 12.75 million ha were sown with cereals, pulses and oilseeds, plus 213,000 ha under sugar beets. While the cultivation of cereals and pulses was 4% higher than expected with a total of 5.672 million ha, the targets for oilseeds could not be met. At 1.78 million ha, the cultivation of soybeans could only reach 96% of the planned area.
