SOFIA/KYIV. Not only has European trade association Coceral issued its production estimates for sunflower seeds in 2023 but the EU Commision has also revised its figures downwards for 2022. Buyers anticipate higher prices.

EU production to rise by 8% in 2023

The EU Commission nominally revised its production estimates for 2022 downwards to 9.24 million mt at the end of December, which is nearly 11% down on the 10.36 million mt registered in 2021. While many leading EU producing countries such as Romania (-19% to 2-31 million mt), France (-4% to 1.83 million mt) or Hungary (-35% to 1.14 million mt) witnessed sharp declines, Bulgaria is the noted exception since production rose by 3% to 2.06 million mt. Coceral, however, etimates last year's production at 9.78 million mt in its December
