SOFIA. Thunderstorms and high winds are supplying Bulgarian growing areas with sufficient moisture, and the winter and spring crops are benefiting alike.

Sowing for the 2017 sunflower seed crop is underway and 14,900 ha have been sown to date, representing 1.86% of the area estimated by Coceral (800,000 ha). At this time last year, it was only 7,900 ha. There were a few delays in the south, but work on the fields in the north of Bulgaria is progressing well.

Falling tendency

Both raw seeds and shelled sunflower seeds are being offered once more at slightly lower prices. However, trades are now stagnating just before the Easter holidays, as hardly anybody seems to be in a rush to buy or sell.

The price for shelled sunflower seeds from Bulgaria is currently still orienting itself on the higher price for raw seeds, and for this reason, suppliers are only able to offer slightly lower prices. Even up to the end of the month, not much should be happening here. Lower prices for raw seeds could lead to a drop in the Bakery prices, however, the first smaller processors are closing their plants for this season in the next few weeks, so that the demand is distributed among the remaining traders.
