Sunflower seeds: Harvest delays expected

SOFIA. This spring, snow and rain left the fields in a condition that made it impossible for many farmers to achieve quick sowing progress. The 2018 sunflower seed harvest may also experience significant delays.

 

Acreage reduced by 80%

The Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture announced that only 94,274 ha had only been sown by the middle of April, down considerably from last year's 519,068 ha. Warm, dry weather is forecasted until the end of the first week of May. The farmers are working hard to make up for lost time. Nonetheless, a delayed start to the harvest is expected this year, and the actual acreage size has not yet been determined.
