Sunflower seeds: drought lowers crop forecasts

SOFIA/KYIV. Heat and drought are causing problems for sunflower seed fields in parts of Europe. Downward corrections to the previously good crop forecasts are to be expected.

No improvement in sight

Hot temperatures and a lack of rainfall are putting sunflower seed fields in Eastern Europe to the test. While the crop forecasts were still looking very good around a fortnight ago, temperatures of more than 40°C have taken their toll on the plants and, according to the latest reports, there will be no relief in the next two weeks either, with the weather set to remain hot and dry.
