SOFIA. Until now, the 2016/17 season offered little excitement on the sunflower seed market. With the beginning of seeding for the new crop, the market players are focussing more and more on the 2017 production.

Current status

In Bulgaria, relatively low temperatures (normally 5-15 °C) are accompanied by freezing rain and snow, and especially the Easter weekend brought high amounts of precipitation. Rain is also forecast for the next few days in the growing areas. But humidity is exactly what the plants need right now for their development. It can only be hoped that damage will be limited.

Many traders also took advantage of the weekend to take a few extra days off, so that there was not much activity on the market. However, this can also be attributed to the fact that hardly anybody wants to sell at the current low commodity prices. Prices for bakery sunflower seeds remain stable with a falling trend, and suppliers are busy with fulfilling ongoing contracts.

It might be worth waiting

Buyers are holding back with prompt requests and are waiting for lower prices. A glance at the first offers for bakery sunflower seeds from the 2017 crop seems to confirm this strategy. At 0.71-0.73 EUR/kg DDP Germany, prices are at a similar level as for sunflower seeds from the previous crop.
