SOFIA. The temperatures are slightly below average (15 °C) and heavy precipitation could threaten sowing operations in the western part of the country.

There are no problems with the sowing of sunflowers, and even if the rain in the western growing areas should cause damage, the farmers would now still have enough time to sow the fields again.

More than enough
There are still enough sunflower seeds available both on the domestic and on the international market, which continues to put pressure on the commodity prices this week. According to current reports, domestic consumption in this season adds up to 882,081 mt, and 217,637 mt of sunflower seeds were exported to date. Thanks to the high surplus stocks and good crop yields, about the same quantity is still available for the last four months of this season.

Prices for the new crop
The price for in-shell sunflower seeds, 96% purity, is lower than last week at 332 EUR/mt CPT Varna. Bakery seeds are stubbornly maintaining their level already since the beginning of the year. As long as the price is accepted both by the buyers and the sellers and sufficient commodities are available on the market, there is hardly any reason to change anything. If the market is spared any negative surprises and the crop develops as expected, changes in the price are not anticipated for the 2017/18 season. Contract offers for deliveries from October 2017 to March 2018 are currently around 620 EUR/mt FCA Bulgaria.
