Sunflower seeds: calls for higher tariffs in Ukraine

SOFIA/KIEV. Several associations in Ukraine would like to follow Russia and are now demanding higher export duties on sunflower seed shipments to the EU. Their alleged objective is to safeguard domestic supplies.

90% of exports destined for EU

As the European Commission has recently reported, the EU imported a total of 276,200 mt of sunflower seeds from third party countries between 01 July and 06 November. Russia suplied as much as 34.3% or 94,737 mt. One year ago the import volume ranged below 200,000 mt. Supply squeezes in many producing countries have, however, prompted market players to reckon with export restrictions in Russia sooner rather than later.
