Sunflower seeds: association demands export duties for shipments from Ukraine

SOFIA/KIYV. The USDA has revised the crop forecast for global sunflower seed production in 2023/2024 upwards in its May report. Kazakhstan plans to double acreage in the coming years and Ukraine is talking about imposing export duties on sunflower seeds.

EU states want to extend measures

While the European Commission estimates EU production at just under 10.5 million mt, the US Department of Agriculture's expectations for EU-wide yields are as high as 11.5 million mt. In addition, Russia (+1.5% to 16.5 million mt), Ukraine (+5.4% to 11.8 million mt) and China (+1.9% to 2.7 million mt) are also expected to achieve an increase in production. This contrasts with declining results in Argentina, Turkey and the USA.
