Sunflower seeds: A 15% drop in production expected

SOFIA. Last week’s rain has improved conditions in the fields, meaning the moisture levels should recover sufficiently. Nevertheless, it is still expected that this year will see a smaller acreage than in 2017.

 

Maximum of 1.5 million mt?
April and May were predominantly dry in Bulgaria, which is why the growers made good progress in sowing the Spring crop, according to the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture. Market participants are anticipating a drop of approximately 100,000 ha in acreage. It also remains to be seen in how far the dryness has any effect on the yield. A fall in production of around 15% to 1.4-1.5 million mt is expected.
